A World We Dare to Imagine Part 3

ConnectED – Bridging the Digital Divide in Education  Background: You may assume that in today's connected world, everyone has a smartphone and internet access at their fingertips. However, the reality is far from it. Despite 87% of households in the US having access to a smart device, a significant digital divide persists, particularly in underserved communities. This gap in access to high-speed broadband is not just about scrolling through social media or streaming entertainment—it's about equitable education opportunities for children. Without reliable internet access, students are unable to fully utilize online resources essential for their academic success. Mission: ConnectED is dedicated to bridging the digital divide in education by increasing access to high-speed internet and digital devices for underserved communities across the nation. Our mission is to ensure that every student has equitable access to the digital resources and technology necessary for academic succes...

A World We Dare to Imagine

When I think about ways to better the world, my first thought is to address basic physiological needs and increase education opportunities in underprivileged communities. According to the Maslow Hierarchy of Needs, the most essential human needs are the ones that keep us alive, like food, water, shelter, and air. Yet, the reality is that not everyone has equal access to such basic needs. Poverty and hunger are interconnected challenges that affect millions of people worldwide, perpetuating a cycle of deprivation and inequality.  While progress has been made in reducing extreme poverty and improving food security, significant disparities still exist, particularly in developing regions. One effective strategy is to support sustainable development initiatives that empower communities to lift themselves out of poverty through economic empowerment, entrepreneurship, and access to financial resources. This can involve investing in microfinance programs, agricultural development projects,...

My Trip to Peru Reflecting on my past month, I found my trip to Peru the most memorable. Many of my friends were curious about my experience in Peru, so I'll dedicate my random post to my Peru trip. Read more to learn about my itinerary, recommendations, and overall rating of Peru! Why Peru  I wanted to pick a destination with equal adventure and relaxation for my last spring break in college. I didn't want to feel bored sitting at a beach for a week, but I didn't want to completely exhaust myself. After some research, I found that Peru would offer me the perfect balance between the two. It has beaches to chill at and gorgeous sights like the Machu Picchu to explore. My parents visited Peru during COVID-19 and had a great experience, encouraging me to book the trip.  The Itinerary (Long Version) There are two primary hubs in Peru, one being Lima and the other Cusco. Lima is Peru's capital, and most international flights go to this city. Lima is home to some of the best ...

Book 2 Post 2

I’m reading Dr. Rick Hanson’s “Resilient: How to Grow an Unshakable Core of Calm, Strength, and Happiness.” I chose it to learn about building resilience and inner peace. Given the chaos in the world these days, I want to be able to rely on myself over external factors. I hoped to learn practical exercises to incorporate into my daily routine when life overwhelms me.  Although I didn’t finish the book, I enjoyed it more than expected. Life “got busy,” and I used that as an excuse to not start the book for a long time, but now I regret not starting earlier. After all, the book is aimed at reducing stress. I expected the author to get straight into advice and for the wording to come across as very technical. However, the author uses many anecdotes and analogies to convey his message, which I found much easier to digest. For example, he mentions that “surgeons have great power over their patients, so they have a great duty to be careful when they operate on them” (Hanson 19). He then ...

Book 2 Post 1

For my second book, I want to read Dr. Rick Hanson's "Resilient: How to Grow an Unshakable Core of Calm, Strength, and Happiness." I'm excited to learn how to build resilience and inner peace in an ever-changing world. It seems like so much is happening in the world these days, and it's easy to get consumed by external factors. Many of us, including myself, turn to mindless scrolling on our devices to escape reality and divert our attention. I'm trying to improve my daily habits and avoid overwhelming myself with meaningless media. I believe it's vital to grow strengths inside, like grit, gratitude, and compassion, which is mentioned in the book description as well.  The world is hard to count on these days, so why not focus on what you can control. I'm excited to read about how the author defined true resilience.  When I hear the word "resilience," I think of people persevering through tough times, but I know it's so much more than tha...

COVID19: The Quest Back Home Do you know those memories that randomly pop up before you go to bed? Well, this story is one that my brain likes to keep reminding me about, and (hopefully) not something I will need to experience again. So here it goes, my treacherous journey back home amidst a global pandemic. The Backstory  Even though I was living in China when the pandemic erupted, I never thought it would put the whole world on lockdown. When my high school announced that winter break would be extended till further notice, my friends and I were ecstatic. It was like Santa listened to my wishes all these years. My friends and I joked about how bad this “virus” could be, expecting it to resemble the flu. Little did I know that this would be my last seeing them until four years later. The Outburst  There had been rumors of a deadly virus going around town. Although there were no official announcements from the health department, people were scared. My high school kept postponin...
