ConnectED – Bridging the Digital Divide in Education 

Background: You may assume that in today's connected world, everyone has a smartphone and internet access at their fingertips. However, the reality is far from it. Despite 87% of households in the US having access to a smart device, a significant digital divide persists, particularly in underserved communities. This gap in access to high-speed broadband is not just about scrolling through social media or streaming entertainment—it's about equitable education opportunities for children. Without reliable internet access, students are unable to fully utilize online resources essential for their academic success.

Mission: ConnectED is dedicated to bridging the digital divide in education by increasing access to high-speed internet and digital devices for underserved communities across the nation. Our mission is to ensure that every student has equitable access to the digital resources and technology necessary for academic success, regardless of their socioeconomic background or geographic location.

My Passion: I feel extremely lucky and privileged to have access to high-quality education but I realize that not everyone is so lucky. Witnessing underfunded schools and disengaged students, I’m driven to create tangible solutions that break down learning barriers and empower individuals to succeed in school and beyond. 

I believe technology hold immense potential to revolutionize education. COVID-19, for example, has highlighted the power of technology in connecting people all around the world. However, it has also emphasized vulnerabilities for those who don’t have reliable technology. There are so many free education platforms, such as Khan Academy and Coursera, yet many remain unaware of or unable to access them. ConnectED bridges that gap. 

Uniqueness: ConnectED doesn’t solely focus on providing devices and internet access but also personalized mentorship programs. Our mentorship programs pair passionate students with experienced mentors who provide guidance and support tailored to each individual’s goals and aspirations. In addition to device distribution and broadband infrastructure development, we also offer digital literacy training and awareness sessions on how to find free education tools that fit their needs. We want to encourage students to use technology to fuel their passions instead of enforcing a one-size-fits-all curriculum.

ConnectED also aims to collaborate with companies like Verizon, AT&T, Apple, Google, Samsung, and others to leverage their expertise and technology infrastructure to lessen the digital divide. By partnering with these industry giants, ConnectED can accelerate its efforts to ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed in the digital age.

When I think about ways to better the world, my first thought is to address basic physiological needs and increase education opportunities in underprivileged communities. According to the Maslow Hierarchy of Needs, the most essential human needs are the ones that keep us alive, like food, water, shelter, and air. Yet, the reality is that not everyone has equal access to such basic needs. Poverty and hunger are interconnected challenges that affect millions of people worldwide, perpetuating a cycle of deprivation and inequality.  While progress has been made in reducing extreme poverty and improving food security, significant disparities still exist, particularly in developing regions. Book 1 Random Post

As an immigrant child, I was immediately drawn to America Ferrera’s “American Like Me” book description. Although I was born in the United States, I spent most of my life outside of it. When I was living abroad, I always felt too American or too foreign. Yet, when I moved back to the States, I didn’t feel “American” enough The idea that home is everywhere and nowhere simultaneously captures the struggle of figuring out where I truly belong. Ferrera’s book, with its stories from immigrants, their kids, and those connected to multiple cultures, reflects the challenges of finding yourself and fitting in as an American. As I’ve experienced, being American is a mix of good and bad, and I’m eager to read more about what others think it entails. I’m about 1/3 of the way through the book and really enjoying it so far.
